Wuheida's pleasing Del Mar turf test

Wuheida, the high-class Godolphin filly, had her first experience of the Del Mar turf track on Tuesday and, apparently, everything about her new surroundings were to her liking.

The Charlie Appleby-trained three-year-old went for a solo spin over seven furlongs, having a good look at the sharpest racing circuit she has ever encountered.

She was having her final serious piece of work before Saturday's G1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, one of nine races on the second and most important day of the showcase meeting.

"I was pleased with the way she did it, and also how she came out of it," Appleby said of the workout.

"The bends on the turf track are very tight, there can be no argument there, but they are well cambered, and at first glance I'd say they are easier than Santa Anita to get around.

"Wuheida has put behind her the setback in Keeneland (a corn in her foot) and I am happy with how she looks. She will have a light piece of work on Thursday, which should have her spot on for Saturday," he said.

Wuheida has drawn 5 in Saturday's nine-furlong contest, with arguably her chief rival Rhododendron drawn 14, the widest in the big field.

Wuheida finished fourth to Rhododendron, beaten a head and two necks, in the G1 Prix de l'Opera at Chantilly on October 1.

Following a belated start to her three-year-old season, Wuheida has put together an impressive and varied series of outstanding performances.

She finished second in the G1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, third in the G1 German Oaks, fourth in Leopardstown's G1 Matron Stakes, before her excellent run in the Opera.

"I feel she is ready to run a big race," Appleby said.
