Thousand Guineas on the cards for Alizee

Mike Hedge

A weekend gallop will determine whether Godolphin’s star filly Alizee will attempt next Saturday’s G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield to add to the G1 title she collected in the Flight Stakes.

Trainer James Cummings said Alizee had come through the Flight so well that the possibility of another run had emerged.

While Alizee is likely to have her spring program extended, Cummings is reconsidering that of multiple G1 winner Hartnell who is now a doubtful runner in the G1 Caulfield Cup.

“We are warming to the idea of Alizee running in the Thousand Guineas,” Cummings said.

“The plan is to give her a piece of work over the weekend and we’ll then make a decision on whether we put her on the float to Melbourne.”

Cummings said initial signs were that Alizee still had more to offer after five runs this time in.

“You’d hardly think that she’d had enough on the line in the Flight …. she savaged it,” Cummings said.

If she doesn’t continue to the Thousand Guineas, Alizee will be spelled to resume next autumn.

Hartnell, meanwhile, is now likely to run in next Saturday’s Caulfield Stakes following second placings at his past two starts behind Humidor in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes and Bonneval in last Saturday’s G1 Underwood Stakes.

Cummings said those two defeats at weight-for-age suggested it would be difficult for Hartnell to reverse the results when conceding weight under handicap conditions in the Caulfield Cup.

“I’d be pretty doubtful that we’re going to run in the Caulfield Cup, I’m warming to the idea of running in the Caulfield Stakes,’ he said.

The trainer also confirmed that his class colt Kementari was on track for next week’s G1 Caulfield Guineas following his third placing in last weekend’s Guineas Prelude.

“He’s very good … bouncing out of his skin,” he said.

Kementari may be joined in the Guineas by stablemate Sanctioned who runs in Saturday’s G1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick.

Another of the stable’s established stars, the G1 Stradbroke Handicap winner Impending, is ready to make his spring reappearance in the Listed Sydney Stakes at Randwick on October 14.
