Queen’s Vase third for Secret Advisor

Racenews
Secret Advisor came through late to gain third in the G2 Queen’s Vase over 14 furlongs at Royal Ascot on Friday, June 23.

The three-year-old Dubawi colt, trained by Charlie Appleby and partnered by William Buick, was held up as second last of the 13 runners.

He was switched widest of all in the straight and started to make progress with two furlongs remaining.

Secret Advisor ran on well inside the final furlong to snatch third close home and went down to the winner Stradivarius by two and a quarter lengths whose time was 3m 1.47s.

Charlie Appleby commented: “I am delighted with that.

“We always felt that this horse would improve with stepping up in trip. We weren’t intending to come for this race but had gone for the King George V Handicap which he didn’t get into.

“He is a nice horse for the future. This is only the fourth race of his career and he should improve more.

“Staying is going to be his game and that is what he is bred to do.”

William Buick added: “It was a good run. He wasn’t really travelling early on so I had to settle at the back.

“They didn’t go a great gallop. He made up great ground at the end and is one for the future.”
