Impressive Masar captures G3 Solario Stakes

Racenews

Masar strode away with the seven-furlong G3 Solario Stakes in the style of a promising performer at Sandown Park, UK, on Saturday, September 2.

The two-year-old New Approach colt, running for the third time, broke well and was settled in third towards the outside by James Doyle.

The seven-strong field was stretched out turning in after a fast pace was set up front by Connect.

Masar was switched further out with two furlongs remaining and came through smoothly to lead before the distance.

The Charlie Appleby-trained runner gained a decisive advantage in the final furlong to score by two lengths from Romanised in 1m 27.89s on ground officially described as good, good to soft in places.

Masar ran well to finish third in the Listed Chesham Stakes over the same distance at Royal Ascot on June 24 after making a winning debut in a six-furlong maiden at Goodwood on May 25.

Charlie Appleby commented: “I’m delighted. James gave Masar a lovely ride

“He got the run we were hoping for. We thought they (Connect and De Bruyne Horse) were the two pace angles in front of us and he got a lovely dream run around.

“I was confident from a furlong out that he was going to carry on galloping and he did everything nicely. It was a pleasing performance and I hope he is a horse with a bright future.

“I will speak to James and His Highness but the Royal Lodge (G2, 1m, Newmarket, September 30) could be a possibility.

“We feel next year will be Masar’s year, so we’ll treat him with kid gloves, hopefully get another run under our belts and then put him away for the winter.”

James Doyle added: “I thought it was a nice, professional performance. Masar had good form in the book, obviously, as being placed in the Chesham was pretty smart form. We knew he'd see out the trip quite well and we just kept it simple.

"He just took a little bit of time to drop down into gear, but once he did he powered away nicely. It was a very professional performance.

“You can sometimes become unstuck here at Sandown Park with an inside draw so the plan was to stay off the fence as we knew he would keep galloping.

“I was pretty confident after going a furlong. I'd say a step up in trip will suit him – he relished the seven furlongs here - it is very stiff. His best furlong was the last one.”
