Avilius and Soleil Marin tackle Prix Guillaume d'Ornano

Racenews

Three-year-old colts Avilius and Soleil Marin take on dual Classic winner Brametot in the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano over a mile and a quarter at Deauville, France, on Tuesday, August 15.

Avilius (Mickael Barzalona) heads to the Normandy course on the back of two good efforts over 10 furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte, having followed up a cosy short-neck success in a Listed race in April with a staying-on third in the G2 Prix Eugene Adam on July 16.

Soleil Marin (Pierre-Charles Boudot) disappointed in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club over an extended 10 furlongs at Chantilly on June 4 but had previously racked up four straight wins, including a swooping victory in the G3 Prix Noailles, run over the same course and distance as the Prix du Jockey Club, on April 16.

As well as Brametot, successful in both the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and the Prix du Jockey Club this season, eight runners for the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano also features G2 Prix Greffulhe victor Recoletos and G1 Derby fourth Eminent.

Lisa-Jane Graffard of Godolphin commented on the Andre Fabre-trained pair: “Avilius tries hard in his races but is realistically running for a place.

“This will be Soleil Marin’s first run since the Prix du Jockey Club and is something of a recovery mission.

“Both horses are in good form and should run well, but Brametot will be very hard to beat.”
